Governance Information
Governance within the Trust is separated into three layers; Members, Trustees and Local Academy Committees.
The Members are akin to the shareholders of a company. They have ultimate control over Trust, with the ability to appoint some of the trustees and the right to amend the trust’s articles of association.
In the Severn Federation Academy Trust, the purpose of governance is to provide:
- strategic leadership
- accountability and assurance
- strategic engagement
- preserving the character of church schools
The board has collective accountability and strategic responsibility for the trust. It has a focus on ensuring the trust delivers an excellent education to pupils while maintaining effective financial management. The board must ensure compliance with:
- the trust’s charitable objects
- regulatory, contractual and statutory requirements
- its funding agreement
The board also has strategic and statutory responsibility for:
- safeguarding and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) arrangements within (and across) the academy trust
- promotion of pupil welfare
- keeping the trust’s estates safe and well-maintained
- making sure that it delivers its commitment to other schools and academies
Refer to the Severn Federation Academy Trust Articles of Association for more information.
The Local Academy Committee Governors have a responsibility for delegated matters concerning their individual schools; including the upholding the ethos of the schools, promoting ties with the outside community, monitoring the impact of the curriculum and ensuring the wellbeing of pupils and staff.
The Severn Federation Academy Trust is responsible for seven primary academy schools;
- Aylburton Church of England School
- Bream Church of England School
- English Bicknor Church of England School
- Lydney Church of England School
- Newnham St. Peters Church of England School

- Rangeworthy Church of England Primary School

Trust Structure
The Academy Trust Governance Code has been developed through the efforts and collaboration of a group of sector-based organisations. The Code both supports existing good practice and encourages further reflection and progress. It is not only aspirational for individual organisations, but also an indicator of an aspiration within and throughout the sector, and an acknowledgement of the power and significance of governance. Good governance leads to better outcomes for Academy Trusts, for their regulators and funders, and crucially, for their staff and pupils.
The Severn Federation Academy Trust Board have adopted and agreed to uphold the Academy Trust Governance Code.
